Hot Springs appeared on my radar during our first visit to Japan. With more than 3,000 ‘onsen’ or hot spring baths, and a centuries-old tradition of bathing in them, it was a great introduction. There are hot springs in many countries, of course, and I started making finding and enjoying them a priority. Outdoor onsen are my favorites.
Hot tubs are a poor second cousin of hot springs. Why sit in recirculated water that must use chemicals to suppress bacteria, when there are places with a never-ending abundant supply of fresh hot pristine mineral water?
