In order to visit Bhutan, you must retain a guide to travel around with you.
After considerable research, I settled on Bhutan Rovers, and Rigzin Namgyel.
Part of the reason I chose Rigzin was that he was very responsive and flexible. I was able to tweak and adjust my tour as I wished, and so I soon arrived at a good combination of touring by car and trekking.

Before trekking, we drove around in a very nice and comfortable 4WD SUV with his driver Pema. Then, on the trek, the crew above (with the help of 6 ponies) provided comfortable tent accomodations and tasty meals and tea as we hiked through area so remote all supplies must be carried in by pony or yak.
In order to reserve a trip like this (mine was 18 days), you must wire the funds in months in advance. Not to worry: it is safe and secure to do this. Rigzin provided everything he promised, on time and well done. It was a pleasure to tour and trek with his able guidance and his explanations of Bhutanese customs and history. I recommend employing him if you travel to Bhutan.
